St. Mary's Episcopal School
A Study of Religious Diversity in Episcopal Schools
Project Description
This study of the religious diversity in Episcopal Schools will document the unique phenomenon of the presence of students from religious communities other than Christian
in Episcopal Schools. The research project will yield statistics and narrative descriptions of the Episcopal Schools' responses to the religious diversity of the student population. Information for the project will be gathered by way of a survey which has been sent to all member schools of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, as well as site visits to a small but representative sample of Episcopal Schools.
The results of the survey of Episcopal schools is going to be made available
by mail this August to those schools who participated in the survey. After June
1, the survey results will be available on this web page. This research
which has been sponsored by the Pluralism Project will also result in a
narrative description of schools which will be based upon information
gathered from the survey, school visits as well as interviews with Chaplains
and students. A copy of this narrative will be made available upon request by
e-mail to: allperson@aol.com or by writing Mary Katherine Allman, 99 Brattle
Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.
The survey has identified a significant amount of religious diversity in
Episcopal Schools when compared to the diversity found in the general
population of the United States. This includes a significant number of
schools which have identified Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist populations of
students between 1 and 40 percent of the student body, as well as schools
which have Jewish populations as high as 50 percent. Survey data will also
be made available on this web page after June 1, 1999.
