Encountering World Religions in Dallas, Texas
Project Proposal
The focus of this project is to study, document and analyze the growing religious diversity of the Dallas, Texas, metropolitan area.
In compliance with the goals of the Pluralism Project, the specific objectives are as follows:
- 1. To document the changes taking place in the Dallas metropolitan area's new religious demography by visiting, investigating, and examining new temples, mosques, gurdwaras, and religious centers associated with Sikh, Hindu, Jain, Zoroastrian, Baha'i, Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian religious traditions.
- To begin to study how these religious traditions are changing as they take root in American soil and develop in a new context. How are they beginning to recreate their community life, religious institutions, rites and rituals, and forms of transmission in the cultural environment of the United States?
- To explore how the Dallas area is changing as we begin to appropriate this new religious diversity in our public life and institutions, and in emerging forms of interfaith relationships.
