PLEASE keep your animals safe!   There have been several reports of animals killed by coyotes and perhaps big cats.  The wildlife are ravenous and of course disturbed and moving from their usual habitat.  Dawn and dusk are generally the most dangerous times, but I would be wary about leaving animals unsecured at night.

Come join us!  We need volunteers to search local newspapers online for lost pet ads and stories.

about lost animals, found animals, full shelters, rescues needed or any animal related question. We will try to help!

New!View a memorable and touching YouTube video honoring those who fought the fire and featuring a number pictures of pets that have been lost and found.

Note that links are to websites that may not be updated for the disaster,
but you can still find addresses and phone numbers.  Current California Time

The San Diego Animal Support Foundation (SDASF) is pleased to announce that free dog and cat food is available to pet owners who have lost their homes in the recent fires in San Diego.  Thanks to the generosity of Wellness/Old Mother Hubbard Premium Pet Food , 13 pallets of high-quality food are now available to those financially burdened by the fires.  To make an appointment to pick up donated food, please call the San Diego Animal Support Foundation at 619-847-8755.  Donations will be distributed this week (November 6 - 10) or until the food is gone.

Check with North County Humane Society and surrounding shelters

VERY IMPORTANT if you lose a pet, you can follow what's at various shelters on a daily basis by going to:

Contact the local county shelter and neighboring shelters. Check dead on arrival, quarantine, sick and injured. Temp. adoption.

Search the property. Some have been found still alive in the rubble.

Post ads in your local newspaper and on Craigslist.com lost and found   (Note this is the lost and found area.)   There is also a Craigslist pet discussion. Lost and found animals need to go in the lost and found area.

Check with nearby vet clinics.

Don't give up for 8 weeks.

If your pet is mircochipped, call the microchip company and make sure they have your CURRENT contact information and register your pet missing.  Your chip may be registered to your vet and your vet may have the chip number if you do not.  Register the chip to yourself, but make sure your vet has your updated address info.

AVID Chip – 9 numbers
1-800-336-2843 ext. 4 (24 Hour) Leave a message if you get the machine. They return calls.

HOME AGAIN - 10 letters and numbers
1-866-738-4324 (24 Hour)

UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS INFO with your vet.  Someone may try to trace on a rabies tag.

PUT UP A SIGN IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD WITH YOUR ANIMAL'S PHOTO AND YOUR CONTACT INFO, EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO SUPPLY THE POST TO PUT IT ON . . .

The best sign is a large photo with the word lost, everything else can be in small print at the bottom.  Anyone who has seen the animal will stop to look at the sign in detail.

New You may print out a blank sign for a dog here http://dogdetective.com/poster.cfm

You may do a sign with a picture if you register.  I do not know if there is a charge.  You may be able to customize it for other animals, I don't know.

Food and water should be left out if you believe the pet is in the area of your home.  Also put a shirt with the owner's smell in a crate.  That might habituate the animal to find safety in the crate and it might be more likely to be there when you come looking.

PETFINDER is your first stop if you need help or want to help. They have links to community pages for animals and lost and found classifieds.

HOW TO PACK YOUR PET

Have your crates, vet records, pet photos, food, water and bowls ready.

Have leashes.  Put collars with ID on all your animals.  Take a permanent marker to write on them if you evacuate because animals bolt.

Have enough friends lined up to come day or night to help you ferry your animals.

Keep my dogs on leashes in the house and the cats shut in interior rooms so as to lessen the chance of bolting when a door is opened.   Crate them as much as you can so it starts getting normal and they are easier to grab. Target has some great soft expandable crates that are cheap.

What can go in the car in advance should be packed and keep a full tank of gas.  Gas lines get long!

Charge your cell phone and have one person out of state that you can call who has all the numbers of people to call in case you evacuate.  You may only get one call if your cell is not working.

Have cash on hand

Here is a comprehensive list that may be of help!

LEAVE WHEN YOU ARE TOLD AND DO NOT ARGUE!  FIREFIGHTERS ARE SPENDING VALUABLE TIME CONVINCING PEOPLE TO LEAVE AND SOME HAVE BEEN INJURED.
