Kosova’s independence and sovereignty are irreversible and inviolable

STATEMENT BY SECRETARY ANTONY J. BLINKEN on Kosova National Day, February 17, 2022

On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Kosova as you celebrate your fourteenth anniversary as a sovereign, independent state.

The enduring partnership between the United States and Kosova is rooted in our shared democratic values. As one of the world’s youngest democracies, Kosova and its citizens are rightly proud of the progress you have made during these 14 years. For our part, we are proud to support you in this effort.

While Kosova’s independence and sovereignty are irreversible and inviolable, building resilient democratic and inclusive institutions that deliver for all citizens requires persistence. The United States stands by Kosova as it works to build a better future for its citizens.

We look forward to Kosova rightfully taking its place alongside its neighbors in European and Euro-Atlantic institutions and reiterate our support for the EU-facilitated Dialogue as the way to achieve an agreement on normalized relations centered on mutual recognition.

We remain grateful for Kosova’s leadership beyond its borders – for your generosity in hosting vulnerable Afghans and your contributions to global security and stability.

I wish peace, prosperity, and good health to the people of Kosova as you continue your democratic journey, and we further strengthen our steadfast friendship, together.
