Summer Research Internships at the Pluralism Project

The Pluralism Project is seeking applications for research internship positions for summer 2013. Interns will conduct research on the growing religious diversity of cities across the United States. This “hometown research” opportunity can be conducted wherever applicants are located and will include field visits to religious centers, ethnographic interviews, and weekly intern cohort meetings via Skype. Research projects may be published in the forthcoming online version of the Pluralism Project’s On Common Ground: World Religions in America. Applications are sought from current undergraduate and graduate students with excellent writing and oral communication skills. Experience in conducting ethnographic field research a plus but not required. Interest in (and respect for) diverse religious communities is a must. Internships are unpaid, although we are happy to work with candidates to secure academic credit or internship compensation through their home institution. American Humanist Association

Description: An internship at the AHA will provide an opportunity to support the organization's current work: advancing humanist values and progressive issue advocacy, focusing on church-state separation, civil liberties, reproductive freedom, human rights, and equality. Foundation Beyond Belief

Secular Student Alliance (SSA)

Description: Secular Student Alliance seeks three full-time summer interns: one graphic design intern, one writing/resource development intern, and one communications intern. These internships are paid positions, each ten weeks long, based in our office in Columbus, OH. The internships are 40 hrs/week at $8/hr and will take place during normal business hours except where otherwise noted. Interns are responsible for arranging their own housing while completing the internship. We can be flexible in terms of time and compensation to meet academic requirements if the internship is to be performed for academic credit. On a case-by-case basis, some work may be able to be done via telecommuting.

Secular Coalition for America (SCA)

Description: The Secular Coalition for America is pleased to offer two unpaid internship positions for summer 2013. The internship will provide activities and opportunities to learn about, assist with, and work with the four main areas of our office: lobbying and advocacy, grassroots and outreach, development and fundraising, and media relations and social media networking.
Applicants: The Secular Coalition for America is seeking highly motivated undergraduate junior- or senior-level students with a demonstrated interest in our mission to increase the visibility of and respect for nontheistic viewpoints in the United States, and to protect and strengthen the secular character of our government as the best guarantee of freedom for all. Occasional weekend and evening hours may be expected. Transportation costs to and from Washington, D.C. will not be provided.

Bahá’í

Baha'i International Community at the United Nations

Description: The Baha'i International Community’s United Nations Office offers internships throughout the year. Interns are selected to work in one or more of the following areas: human rights, gender equality, social development, sustainable development, and website development. The work is carried out under the guidance of the Senior Researcher and/or one of our Representatives to the United Nations. Interns may be asked to assist with: conducting background research to inform the Office’s policy and programmatic work; attending and briefing staff on relevant meetings at the UN and in the NGO community; preparation of contributions to UN Commissions and major events; representatives’ work on NGO Committees; translating and editing documents; developing website content; and some administrative tasks. Internships also available in areas of disaster relief and research/writing.
Applicants: The Baha'i International Community’s United Nations Office in New York is looking for an undergraduate or graduate intern for these positions. Internships can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis depending on the project and the availability of the candidate. While we are not able to provide financial remuneration, candidates with visas permitting them to work in the United States receive a lunch stipend and reimbursement for commuting expenses.

Description: The National Spiritual Assembly embraces the youth of the American Bahá’í community and delights in the growing number of young believers investing in the transforming power of Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation. To show its appreciation, an internship program just for you has been initiated! This program will provide you with the opportunity to serve at a Bahá’í school AND have a hands-on, capacity-building experience. It is designed to allow you space to research and practice application of spiritual principles to vocational endeavors, assist you in elevating your personal skills and prepare you to contribute to the world-wide effort to infuse all walks of life with the harmonizing influence of spiritual insight. Responsibilities include: shadow school staff serving in an area that may be related to your field of study, such as, hotel management, food service, education, business and finance, IT support, etc; work on major projects for the school related to your area of study and/or conduct your own research projects, applying the Teachings of the Bahá’í Faith to your profession; serve as on-site registrar or bookstore coordinator; practice consultation and offer suggestions for implementation to the school administrators, etc.
Applicants: Interns will serve at their respective Bahá’í school for one full year and each school has an opening for two interns per year. The National Assembly will provide you with room and board along with a bi-weekly stipend. Each school offers a living experience within a distinctive Bahá’í environment and opportunities to connect with a diverse number of staff, guests and presenters. Qualifications include: a college degree, availability to commit to one full year of service, an understanding of the Bahá’í teachings and principles and of the current Plan, demonstrated ability to serve as a model of Bahá’í standards and to apply principles of service; ability to communicate effectively with a voice of encouragement, optimism and enthusiasm; ability to apply spiritual principles to problem solving; ability to self-start and collaborate effectively with others.

Church World Service - Resettlement Support Center (RSC)
Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Description: The Resettlement Support Center (RSC) Africa operates the US refugee resettlement program in Sub-Saharan Africa through a Cooperative Agreement with the Department of State/Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration. RSC Africa is responsible for the preparation of refugee case files for adjudication by Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) officers, as well as the out-processing and cultural orientation of all approved cases. RSC is administered by the Church World Service/Immigration and Refugee Program (CWS/IRP) and is based in Nairobi, Kenya. There are seven internships available: early childhood development, ESL, IT, predictive analysis, publications, and special needs pedagogy. RSC does not provide airfare or travel assistance but does provide a small living stipend for interns selected from outside of Kenya. Interns selected from within Kenya receive a small transportation allowance.

Description: Sojourners strives to provide an internship program of Christian discipleship, with a focus on life and faith, prayer and formation, and work and mission. Sojourners is a connecting point for Christians nationally and internationally. We examine pressing moral, political, social, and economic issues in a spiritual, theological, and action-oriented context. We encourage people to think about the gospel implications of the issues society faces and, by bringing them to light in the context of faith, to set forth and encourage a vision for the future that is just and sustainable for the earth and its people. Lectionary reflections and columns nurture spiritual growth; editorials provide political analysis; and book, film, and music reviews critique popular culture.
Applicants: Sojourners Internship Program is open to anyone 21 years or older who is single or married without dependents (you must have a Social Security number). We seek each year to have as much age, gender, class, race, and denominational diversity as possible. Sojourners interns provide new energy, enthusiasm, and vitality to our life together.

Sojourners interns commit themselves to one year of service, starting in early September and ending in mid-August the following year. American Medical Association Ethics Group Internship

Description: Interns provide support for ongoing projects and initiatives in the Ethics Group. Interns are asked to conduct research on a wide variety of medical ethics issues which contribute to the formation of AMA ethics policy and other research projects related to the Code of Medical Ethics. Work may include researching legal, medical, or ethics literature and other resources; organizing and summarizing research material; and handling telephone inquiries or written correspondence. Interns also have the opportunity to attend faculty seminars and interact with a diverse range of professionals working in bioethics at a professional medical association. Past interns have obtained positions in private health law firms, health care consulting firms, and health related graduate programs.
Applicants: Program specifications reguire candidates be enrolled in academic course work, receiving academic credit, at the time they serve as an intern. The Ethics Group recruits undergraduate and graduate student interns to work at the AMA Headquarters in Chicago on an ongoing basis for summer, fall, and winter/spring semesters. Internships are unpaid but participants will receive course credit for their work in accordance with the requirements of their academic program. Past interns have typically been law students, medical students, and undergraduates with an interest in bioethics, philosophy, religion, biology, or other life sciences.

Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries - Interfaith Youth Initiative

Description: IFYI is a transformational program for the high school youth and college age students who participate, and also for adults who serve as mentors! Coming together as an interfaith group for eight days June 25 - July 2 holds many blessings and challenges as youth and staff participants work to live together harmoniously in a world of infinite differences. The IFYI experience is not only a transformational one, but also an intense one! As staff, be prepared for eight intense days of service to the youth participants of this program. Though we incorporate staff reflection into IFYI in order to make the experience valuable for mentors, know from the onset that staffs are “on” for most of the 8-day experience. The IFYI experience is one of “immersion” into the world of youth work, interfaith dialogue, service, and peacemaking. Interfaith Alliance

Description: Interfaith Alliance offers key internship positions in three target areas: public policy, development, and field work. Public policy interns research core issues and update website information, create policy pages and spreadsheets, attend policy meetings with affiliate organizations, assist with ongoing policy projects and initiatives, and comment on relevant news for regular blog entries. Development interns assist in outreach and logistics planning for major fundraising events, conduct research on prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors, write letters to donors in response to their questions about our issue positions; develop promotional materials for donor outreach, and write and edit mailings that will reach thousands of members. Interfaith Center of New York

Description: This part-time internship is for a highly motivated and organized individual with strong outreach skills to assist in the research, outreach and implementation phases of an innovative program that is developing partnerships between Catholic and Muslim social service providers. The Catholic and Muslim Social Service Project will develop ongoing relationships between Muslim social service providers and Catholic Charities through shared projects that serve both groups. Muslims and Catholics will learn about each others’ faiths and how to work together while servicing the needs of their communities. The program operates in Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island. Responsibilities include: Conduct outreach to Muslim and Catholic partners, religious leaders and social service providers through phone calls, emails, and/or meetings; maintain database of contacts and notes about outreach and meetings; assist in development of partnerships through event planning and execution; assist in monitoring and tracking the implementation of projects designed by partners; and assist with program reporting.
Applicants: The ideal candidate is a graduate student who is interested or focused on religious studies, or interfaith studies. Graduate students with demonstrated relevant interests or prior work experience who may be currently studying fields other than religion, and advanced undergraduates will also be considered for the position. Qualifications include: Academic study and/or professional experience working with Catholic or Muslim communities; clear and effective writing and communication skills; computer proficiency; ability to work independently; strong administrative and general office skills; graduate student preferred; undergraduate juniors and seniors with exceptional academic, outreach and communication skills will also be considered.

North American Interfaith Network (NAIN)

Description: The North American Interfaith Network (NAIN) offers a unique opportunity to include younger representatives (ages 16-35) in a valuable interfaith encounter during the 2013 NAINConnect in Toronto, ON, Canada. This scholarship recognizes young adults across the continent who are actively engaged in important work at the high school, college, graduate, and professional level. This year, NAIN offers two scholarship opportunities:

  • The Young Adult Scholarship provides a stipend of $500 to cover the cost of attending the Connect.
  • The Local Toronto Area Scholarship is designed for applicants from the Toronto area. It provides a reduced stipend of $250.

Scholarship recipients will receive:

  • A stipend to help cover the cost of registration, travel, housing, and meals at the Connect taking place in Toronto, Canada - August 11-14, 2013.
  • A reduced registration fee.
  • The option of sharing a room with another scholarship recipient.

Scholarship recipients are required to:

  • Be actively engaged at the NAINConnect, attending the majority of the programming.

Stony Point Community of Living Traditions Young Adult Summer Institute Program

Description: At Stony Point Institute we are dedicated to walking the road of social transformation by placing relationship and community at the center of our social justice program. We are offering a rich opportunity to live in community with peers from different faiths. Together we will study the wisdom of the three Abrahamic traditions and develop practices for faith-based personal and social transformation as we strengthen our relationship to the earth. The Stony Point Institute is a summer residential program dedicated to creating community based on listening, learning and living together. Students will live communally in a large residence with several separate bedrooms for women and men. Most weekday mornings, students will work together in the Stony Point vegetable gardens growing their relationship to the land. Additional projects include sacred text study, social change practices, and intentional living.
Applicants: The Stony Point Summer Institute is seeking Jewish, Christian and Muslim young adults, ages 19-29, who are grounded in their tradition and who have a passion for multi-faith social activism and civic engagement. There is no cost to participating in the Summer Institute other than travel to attend. For those who who are selected to participate in the Institute, scholarships to help with that participation will be made available on the basis of need.

United States Commission on International Religious Freedom

Description: The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom was created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 to monitor the status of freedom of thought, conscience, and religion or belief abroad, as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and related international instruments, and to give independent policy recommendations to the President, Secretary of State, and Congress. Internships available: communications, government relations, policy, legal, and administrative.
Applicants: Only currently enrolled students are eligible for internships with USCIRF. Most internships are part-time (20-30 hours) and all are unpaid. Course credit is available. Although the Commission does not provide housing or moving expenses, it does offer transportation stipends up to a maximum of $125 per month.

Institute for Women's Policy Research

Description: The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) conducts rigorous research and disseminates its findings to address the needs of women, promote public dialogue, and strengthen families, communities, and societies. IWPR is committed to assisting the professional development of students and graduates interested in economic justice for women. IWPR’s internship program is designed to provide participants with challenging work experiences under the guidance and supervision of researchers with extensive knowledge of women’s policy issues and social science research. Internships available in: research, communications and outreach, development, and accounting. Interns receive a stipend of $155 per week.
Applicants: Each internship is available for qualified applicants, including relevant degree path and professional experience. All IWPR interns must have good computer skills, excellent writing and communication skills, and an interest in women’s issues. Prior office experience is desirable, as interns are responsible for a certain amount of general office work, such as photocopying, answering phones, filing, and maintaining the library. Interfaith Worker Justice

Description: Interfaith Worker Justice, a network of people of faith that calls upon our religious values in order to educate, organize, and mobilize the religious community in the United States on issues and campaigns that will improve wages, benefits and conditions for workers, and give voice to workers, especially low‐wage workers. We partner closely with leaders in the labor movement as well as labor‐friendly community organizations. We welcome people of good will from every faith tradition who are committed to proclaiming the dignity of every working person and securing the well‐being of all working people. IWJ interns will provide general support to our workers’ rights campaigns, helping mobilize religious leaders and faith‐based activists for timely actions to help janitors, hotel workers, farm workers, and security guards. This work will take the form of making phone calls, crafting emails or literature, engaging in one on one meetings with community and religious leaders, meeting with local union representatives, organizing events and attending meetings as a member of Interfaith Worker Justice. The intern will be supervised directly by an organizer on site as well as receive support and coaching from a IJW’s National staff member.
Applicants: The student must be a person of faith or interested in working closely and respectfully with persons of faith. Familiarity and comfort with religious practices outside of one’s tradition is essential. We desire a student who is well‐versed in politics, history, and economics and is capable of interpreting public affairs theologically. No prior experience in community organizing is preferred but not required. Familiarity with the history of the U.S. labor movement is recommended but by no means required. The student must show strong interest in forging an understanding of social and economic justice from a theological perspective and in learning to analyze economic and political realities as viewed through the lens of faith. The student must have an inquisitive nature and an open curiosity about how religious practice informs and supports the direct action organizing we do. There is no qualifying “religious test,” nor expectation of orthodox to any particular tradition.

We keep goats, sheep, chickens, and rabbits. We experiment with alternative energy; and host retreats. We are activists for the transgender and intersex communities. We do handcrafts of various kinds, and make pagan prayer beads. Cauldron Farm hosts several retreats every year for various groups. We have a large ritual field out back with a laid stone labyrinth, a large fire pit, and primitive camping for around 80. Cauldron Farm is the centerpoint of the First Kingdom Church of Asphodel, an eclectic neo-pagan group that holds regular open ceremonies and rituals in central Massachusetts. We also run Asphodel Press, a publishing collective for small-market pagan books and religious devotionals.
Applicants: Cauldron Farm welcomes interns to live on the farm, help with chores and handcrafts, facilitate retreats and rituals, and work for Asphodel Press. The only limitations are the Cauldron Farm House Rules, available on the Cauldron Farm website.

Sikhism

Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF)

Description: The SALDEF Internship Program offers Sikh American youth rare opportunities for political advocacy and leadership development. The program educates students on issues of civil rights, public policy, and the legislative process. Students will gain practical experience in community organizing, research and writing, legal issues, political action, and educational outreach. Applicants will have the opportunity to be mentored by civil rights leaders and attend political events in the Nation’s Capital. Applicants will work on National issues of concern and develop critical project management and implementation skills. College credit for internship has also been arranged in the past. SALDEF is seeking interns in: legislation, communication, and public policy.
Applicants: The program is designed for Sikh American students, although students of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Applicant must exhibit: excellent writing/research skills, demonstrated academic achievement, computer skills, strong work ethic, and attention to detail. Applicants must have completed at least one year of undergraduate studies. Graduate Students are also welcome to apply.
Application dates and deadline: Internships are offered full-time (40 hours per week) with occasional weekend and evening commitments. Part-time programs also available (minimum 10 hours per week required). Available on a rolling basis. Application deadline open.
