The Pluralism Project at Harvard University

Research conducted by affiliates at Kent State University led by Dr. David W. Odell-Scott and Dr. Surinder M. Bhardwaj in 1999.

Activities and Schedule

The Weekly schedule is as follows:
Monday: 8:00-11:00 A.M., 5:00-8:00 P.M.
Thursday: 8:00-11:00 A.M.
Friday: 8:00-11:00 A.M., 5:00-8:00 P.M.
Saturday: 8:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M., 5:00-8:00 P.M.
Some of the celebrations held at the temple are: Ramanaumi with about 100-150 participants, Janmashtami/Krishna Jayanjai with 150-200 participants, Ganesh Chathurth attracts 100-150 participants, Dusseia, 75-100 participants and Dipauri with 175-200 participants. There are also one or two monthly festivals. The center is also used for birthdays, weddings, and celebrations and there is a children's dance class. A newsletter is published every three months.

History

Hindus normally worship at home but also visit temples whenever they wish. This temple has its origins with a group of Indian Hindu community members. The major challenges include financing and participation by community members. Most of the Hindus in the Mahoning Valley area (Youngstown, Warren, Girard, and Boardman) settled there in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Demographics

The temple has many families with young children who worship together. Many of the families have grown-up children who do not worship at the temple anymore.

The center is a two level square structure built in 1986.
