Overview

The branch of Hillel on the Arizona State University (ASU) campus is connected with the international Hillel foundation intended to promote Jewish Campus life. The Tempe branch was originally established in the early 1960s but did not find a permanent meeting place until 1969. The group first rented a room at the Tempe First United Methodist Church, and held services at the Danforth Chapel on the ASU campus. Catering to a fluid student membership, Hillel has offices just opposite the ASU campus and membership has tripled since the late 1960s.

The diversity of the Jewish student population is reflected in Hillel's membership. Hillel seeks to serve this young and multi-national group through a number of programs and lecture series. Some these lead to wider participation in movements calling for social action on a range of issues; others explore Jewish spirituality, culture and art. Other activities are designed to provide companionship, and include various sports (such as rock-climbing) and other social outings.

Regular Shabbat services are held at the Hillel center, while for special seasonal observances the center frequently rents rooms on the ASU campus.
