The Pluralism Project was developed by Professor Diana L. Eck at Harvard University in 1991 to study and document the growing religious diversity of the United States. In the work of the Project, we have had three goals:

  • To document some of the changes taking place in America's cities and towns by beginning to map their new religious demography --- their old and new mosques and Islamic centers, Sikh gurdwaras, Hindu and Jain temples, Buddhist temples and meditation centers, Zoroastrian and Taoist religious centers.

  • To study how these religious traditions are changing as they take root in American soil and develop in a new context. How are they beginning to recreate their community life, religious institutions, rites and rituals, and forms of transmission in the cultural environment of the United States?

  • To explore how American Civil Society is changing as we begin to appropriate this new religious diversity in our public life and institutions, and in emerging forms of interfaith relationships.

In the past, our work has included affiliate religion departments, theological schools, and individual researchers. Following our NEH Summer Seminar, "World Religions in America," we are excited for the opportunity to include the vital contributions of school teachers in the ongoing work of the Pluralism Project.

One of the academic aims of the Pluralism Project is to support scholars and students in the study of religion as they become acquainted and engaged with the religious communities of their own region as an integral part of both research and teaching. We are interested in finding projects that will help teachers revitalize their teaching and develop projects to supplement class work.

Teacher Affiliates will contribute copies of their findings and materials to the Pluralism Project Archives. Some of these may be incorporated into a future edition of the CD-ROM On Common Ground: World Religions in America or incorporated into the Pluralism Project web site: http://www.pluralism.org.
