Since the 1980s, refugees from Sri Lanka have been living in Germany. A high percentage of these Sri Lankan migrants are Hindu Tamils. Though early immigrants had no public religious institutions, through time Tamil Hindus in Germany set up prayer halls and temples and organised the collective celebration of festivals. By 2005, they worshipped in 25 Hindu Tamil temples. One distinctive feature of these temples, unlike the temples of other Hindu immigrants, is the practice of public processions. These processions provide spectacular occasions for Sri Lankan Hindu Tamils to demonstrate their religious faith are public processions.
