Although Brown became officially nonsectarian in the 1930s, today the spiritual and moral life of the university continues to be "regarded and taken care of" by Brown's Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life. This chaplaincy has become a model among multifaith academic chaplaincies in serving the increasingly diverse religious population of this major university. The university's motto is "In Deo Speramus"—"We Hope in God"—"Hope" being the State motto.
