Williams was granted land by the Narragansetts at the head of Narragansett Bay and established his settlement by a freshwater spring. He was soon joined by family and friends. In his memoirs, Williams wrote, "Having a sense of God's merciful providence unto me in my distress, I called the place Providence. I desired that it might be a shelter for persons distressed for conscience."

At the Roger Williams National Memorial in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, this garden encloses the freshwater spring around which Williams made his settlement in 1636. Williams' house was located where the brick building stands in the background across the street.
