Craig’s list for New Orleans (no photos, but this is a must post and you also need to look at any found reports -ignore any spam e-mails you get requesting money, they are scammers from overseas)

How to search for your lost pet:

1. Post your pet’s description and photo on the above web sites and mailing lists.

2. Call the animal control facilities and humane societies in your area and adjacent areas immediately and keep in touch with them daily.

http://muttcats.com/shelters/louisiana.htm

see also the list below

3. Post a lost poster with one or two good pictures of your pet that show their identifying characteristics (unusual coloring, markings, etc.) (See sample poster below).

Even if you can't locate a photo, you may have a photo on your cell phone or in photos taken by friends and family during get-togethers. Many places offer photo scanning and you will want a digital version for uploading.

This poster should be posted at neighborhood grocery stores, convenience stores, hardware stores, churches, and on the blocks surrounding your home. You can also make postcards with this poster or mini flyers, six to a page, with your pet’s picture, identifying characteristics and contact number and distribute them to homes in the area.

Please note that what you need in large letters is LOST DOG (or CAT) along with a big photo. Surprisingly people can't always tell if it is a dog or cat while driving past. Put any other info in small print. Anyone who is going to help you will stop and look at the sign and copy the info, so do not use valuable space making the phone number and other details big enough to read from a car.

4. Go to www.whitepages.com. Click on the tab for reverse address. Type in your street without including the house number. This will pull up a list of every home on the street, together with names and phone numbers. Repeat this for surrounding streets in a 5 mile radius for cats and a 7 mile radius for dogs. By phoning around, you can often find someone who has seen your pet and can pinpoint a location and the date/time they were seen there.

5. Knock on doors and talk to children you see on the street. They see a lot and notice animals. Please note that there is some debate about offering a reward. On the one hand it may , on the other hand, someone may keep a sighting secret because they want the reward.

Here is a sample poster:
