Achilles in Vietnam : Combat Trauma and the Undoing of Character
A fascinating discussion of Vietnam veterans with PTSD,
the Illiad, and how the two intersect. The author has taken a new look at the Illiad and
far from calling it a fantasy, he has found it an accurate depiction of what soldiers
endure. You will be fascinated by how his patients trust him, but it is clear they see
that he understands.
Sheehan, Neil

Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction in 1989.

Why the Senate Slept
Per Amazon: "A carefully researched analysis by one who was in fact a participant--a staff assistant to Senator Nelson (D-Wis.), who sought to amend the Gulf of Tonkin resolution to preclude use of U.S. ground forces--Siff provides the first accurate account of how the political processes in the U.S. Senate allowed the executive branch to launch a major war, with basically no accountability to Congress."
Sinaiko, Eve (Editor), Anthony F. Janson (Editor)
Vietnam : Reflexes and Reflections : The National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum
I wish everyone could pay a visit to this museum at 1801 South
Indiana, Chicago IL. All of the art is by Vietnam veterans. Some of the works
are very good, and most of the art causes the viewer to think about why it was
created. A number of the pieces I have come to like better on repeated
viewing, perhaps because my first reaction was to the emotion. Give the fancy
Contemporary Museum a pass and go down to see this museum. It is in a historic
Chicago neighborhood which is also of interest. Well, if you can't go, buy the book!
It is a very nice volume with commentary by the artists. Oct. 98

Vietnam Veterans' Homecoming:
Crossing the Line
This book is unlike any Vietnam book I have
seen. It is a series of short paragraphs, some like meditations, others more
like musings, on life before during and after the war. It is not really about
the war, but about living your life and relationships with others and reasons
for behavior. Some of the musings are simplistic, but maybe I shouldn't be
looking for something complicated. There is a pattern and a tone to the book
that is reassuring. This is someone recovering. (The author
worked in a hospital.) I think anyone who is trying to understand PTSD
would get something good out of this. But heck, all I should say here
is Patience Mason endorsed it!

General P.X. Kelley notes in his foreword to the book,
"Because of its elatively short duration, Operation Texas has never been given its
rightful place in history. For those who were there on March 21, 1966, however, it
is a day they shall always remember. In the words of Major Ernie DeFazio, who was my
executive officer at the time and who had landed on the beach at Iwo Jima as a young
enlisted marine over two decades before, 'Texas was the longest and toughest day of my
life.'" While in Vietnam, the author participated in numerous operations,
including Starlite (August 18-24, 1965), Piranha (September 7-10, 1965), Double Eagle I
(January 28-February 19, 1966), Utah (March 4-7, 1966), and Texas (March 20-25, 1966).
