I just loaded a few photos of Chu Lai 68-69. I was a squid working at NSAD on Rosemary Point. Thank you all for your sleepless nights and hard work. My life in Chu Lai was embarrassingly protected. Please enjoy the photos.

For those of you who served or passed thru the 18th Surgical Hospital at Quang Tri, I bear the bad news that I, as part of a MACV Advisory Team, had to destroy the beautiful hospital on April 1, 1972 (Easter Sunday). We were completly surrounded by 20,000 NVA and got lifted out that morning by
helicoptors. We were only a small team of 15 Advisors to the ARVN 3rd Division. My senior advisor, Col. Metcalf and I personally selected the compound for our headquarters/living area because of the
helo-pad and of course the wonderful generators that provided electricity and running water.
When we got there in Dec. 1971, every building in the area was totally deserted. Totally intact, but no Americans within 100 miles, except a hand full of us American Advisors. All hell broke lose on March 30, 1972, when the NVA surprised us, and the World, by coming across the DMZ only 2-3 miles away. We held out for 2 days, and got orders to escape and evade to the coast...but thank God the choppers came at the last minute and saved us.
For the few months we were there, we enjoyed everything you left behind. We surrounded the small compound with wire/bunkers/watch towers, etc...and sweated blood everything night waiting for an attack. When we found out the choppers were coming to take us out, Col. Metcalf gave the order to destroy everything we could. We had been under constant artillery fire for two days and took several hits, so there was not much to destroy. We mainly use thermite gernades to burn everything down. We put sand in the tanks of the generators and turned them on high and ran like hell.
I remember using my M16 to shoot up the Officer/EM combined Club....bottles were flying every where. The mess hall had taken a direct hit and food was every where.I just remember the syrup...it was everywhere and we where cleaning our boots off when the choppers came in. What a heck of way to leave your beautiful hospital.
We lost two advisors, one came in by chopper from Camp Evans. We placed him in the operating room...but we did not have any medics and he died from his wounds. Two weeks later, I went with a small team and walk thru the compound to check things out and look for any bodies of Americans. The entire place had been sacked by the NVA Army looking for loot. To make sure they got nothing of value, our higher headquarters had a B52 bombing raid over the entire base a week later.
I got to see some of the aerial photos of the raid....bad news, but there in the middle of the mess was the
helo-pad with the big red cross.....saying "We came, We Served." It is now December 10, 2002....and I thank all of you that served at Quang Tri..... God speed!

Enjoyed your site - read entries from May to present. I noticed none mentioned flight attendants. I was a flight attendant for World Airways 1967 to 1969, we didn't serve in country but we did a lot of landings and take-off from Vietnam.
I have belonged to a Vietnam Veterans Group (Called Freedom Birds) here in Id.Falls since 1984, I am a past President of the group. Even though this group was made up of all ex- military men, they asked me to join because of my affliation with Vietnam and the soldiers.
We just published a 300+ page book honoring the Idaho's 45,000 Vietnam Veterans who served and the state 251 causalities.
We have been told by our U.S. State Sentor that our book is the nation's first comprehensive, statewide account of the veterans'stories from Vietnam. I worked on this book since 1990 and am honored to have been able to pay tribute to these brave men. Name of this book is "Reasons to Remember".
Would love to hear from other flight attendants who flew in and out of Vietnam.
Keep up the good work in recognizing the Women Civilian Vietnam Veterans.

Just found this site. Beautiful. I was a Navy E-5 stationed in the Delta '71-'72. In 2001 I was in DC as part of Run For The Wall. We were at a dinner at the DC Rambler's clubhouse and a lady was sitting across from me wearing an old 'Nam fatigue blouse. I asked her if she had been in country. Somewhat reluctantly she replied that she had been a nurse with 3rd
Surg. Of course I immediatly said "Welcome home sister." . Tears began to stream down her face and she said that no one had ever said that to her before. It broke my heart. Welcome home Sisters.

I was brought in on 30 Jan. 72 after being rescued from a cobra crash by Jolly Greens and Sandys from the 37th ARRS at
Danang. Was treated great by the staff and poorly by the MP's at 24th Corps when I tried to hitch back to Phu Bai in a cut up flight suit, a car-15 and no hat. If anyone has data and files from that period, I am writing a story for a magazine about my rescue. Is there a 95th historian out there?

SEEKING ENTERTAINERS FROM THE VIETNAM WAR...
I am writing a book and play about my experiences as a seventeen year-old Jewish/Australian Flamenco and Jazz dancer in the Vietnam war, and the effects those experiences have had on my life. I toured all over South Vietnam from March to June, 1970. There are photos of me (my old publicity shots that got me the tour) on my web site
http://www.chariot.net.au/~aviva
I seek contact with any ex-service personnel, entertainers, journalists or others from that period in Vietnam who remember having seen me on stage or in person. This is for my own healing as well as for the book and my play, "This is a War Zone, Baby -- Improvise!".
I am a member of the Vietnam Veterans’ Association of Australia, South Australian Branch Inc. and the Returned and Services League
(RSL). Since coming out of the woodwork in October 1995, I have had some very moving encounters with Australian ex-servicemen. Some have told me that it was having contact with entertainers in Vietnam that raised their spirits and in some cases, kept them from committing suicide. Many Americans I've met on the net and in person have expressed the same feelings.
I am one of the numerous entertainers who experienced Vietnam and the war very differently from what is portrayed in the media. This book is an as yet untold account of part of the war. Some people I met in Vietnam have had a significantly positive influence over various aspects of my life.
As I don’t have any photographs of my time in ‘Nam (I burned the few I did have in the erroneous belief that my memories would vanish with the photos), I am also seeking copies of photos of me that anybody may have. It’s a long time ago, but there were thousands of photos taken of me there – some must have survived.
My name is now Aviva Sheb’a. On my passport (and on my in-country ID), my name was Vivienne Miriam Marsh. My stage name was
Aviva, which is actually the name I was given at birth. Date of Birth: 21 May, 1952. I was with the group, The
Sydney-Siders. I also did some shows with the group, The King’s Cross Capers. These troupes were both Australian, but we were employed by the agency, The Douglas Wolf
Organisation, to entertain at the US military bases. We also performed for the Australians. We were not with the USO shows or those organised by the Australian Forces Overseas Fund
(AFOF). I went to Thailand with the King’s Cross Capers on June 7, touring the US bases. I'd REALLY love to find a woman by the name of Dianne. Alas, I have no idea what her surname was, but she was also a dancer with the same groups. Other members of the
Sydney-Siders -- Bruce Furney, (guitar, trumpet, vocals) Ralph Graham (guitar, vocals) Denise Cooper (singer) and I all met up in Sydney on Australian Vietnam Veterans' Day, August 18 this year! We all want to know how/where Dianne is -- WE LOVE YOU, DEE! What a blast that was!
Helen Nolan, who spent two years in Vietnam during the war (and who introduced me to this site), organised for us to lay a wreath at the Sydney Cenotaph for the Non-Combatants who died in VN, or who have died since due to their service there.
Others in the Sydney-Siders were Grahame Furney (he's living in London) and Jim Crowley. Very sadly, Jim passed away on St. Patrick's Day this year. Other members of the King's Cross Capers: Ron Blaskett, (ventriloquist -- his dolls were Gerry Gee and Adolphus Twirk), Ron McMurray (guitar, vocals), Paul Trevi (vocalist), George Gauci (drums), Sam D'Angelo (bass).
Some of my letters home to my parents actually arrived(!) and my mother kept them. Therefore I have some details of places I visited in Vietnam and approximate dates. At some bases, we did several shows.
Arrived in Vietnam March 12, 1970.
26-31 March: Vinh Long, Can Tho, returned to Saigon.
2 April: Da Nang. We were based there for several weeks.
5,6 May: Dong Ha
12 May: Qui Nhon
13 May: Phu Bai (or Phu Tai?) collapsed after one of the shows, was driven some kilometres away for treatment at a base infirmary. This may have been Can
Tho, but I don’t have exact details. I was treated for diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration.
14 May: L.Z. English and Phu Cat (could have been Phuket, not sure of spelling)

Other people mentioned by name in my letters are: Staff Sargeant Earl (Freddie) Walker, Bob
Golling, whose birthday was also on May 21st. He was from Cleveland, Ohio. (Believe it or not, he actually knew my uncle in Cleveland.) Other names I remember are Staff Sgt. Farmer (from
Pleiku), Raoul Rodriguez, a Medic/Captain, if I remember rightly in Saigon.
There are many people I remember, but not their names. I often wonder what happened to them. Some I would like to include in my book, with permission and by name, if possible.
I appreciate any assistance.
My heartfelt thanks to everyone in Vietnam and whom I've met since, who saved my sanity in any way – even if it I didn’t realise it at the time!
Love and peace to you all,

Hi, ladies. A fellow RN here married to a Vietnam Vet. I salute all of you! I was approached by a man carrying a sign at the Kokomo VV reunion, looking for an RN named Suzanne (Suzie) Christy who served in Cu Chi from '67 to 68. The name spelling might not be right. This man is John W.
Erby. Phone # is 513-777-1538. He seemed very intent on finding this nurse to thank her for saving his life. If you know anything about her, please contact either me or him. Thanks!

The website and guestbook are moving documentaries. I was at Cam Ranh Bay, Sept. '70 to Sept. '71 with the 14th Aerial Port. Lived on Herky Hill the other side of main base. We had a Red Cross Center and God Bless the Donut Dollies that ran it. My life on base paled compared to those in the field. I do recall the constant Cobra gunships firing all nite long. The ammo dump blowing up at 3:30 am. The Navy instalation taking small arms fire from Mika Village[Buddhist Temple]. And a Lieutenant just before leaving for the states taken by a sapper bomb. Over time I am not as proud at how I acted after learning more about others who saw the real action. Reading the guestbook testimonies tells me I was part of something I didn't have a full picture of. I can see now that the Red Cross women and the field hospitals, field nurses and
medics/corpmen were very special entities as well as the soldiers. I'll visit here and read more as time permits. As I do a website I will link to this site as well.

I, like the other veterans listed here, want to thank all of the women who served in Vietnam (in any capacity). As an infantryman with the 1/27 "Wolfhounds", 25th Div ('68-'69), I can't begin to express my gratitude for your service. We had to be there...you didn't! I'm sure all of you have been told many times how much you meant to us...but I would be remiss if I didn't share my sentiments with you. Simply stated, all of you were revered by every GI...almost to the status of a saint. You were life, hope and most importantly, an American woman!!! I have pictures of some of the 25th Div. Donut Dollies. One was taken Christmas day, 1968 at FSB Mahone I. There was one DD from Minnesota who I was in love with. I believe her name was Judy Hutmantle (phonics)? She was always extremely kind, generous and patient. If anyone knows her whereabouts, please feel free to give her this message. Again, thank you for all that you did, and I only hope that any pain that you carried home with you is abating slowly but surely. Sincerely, SP4 Mark Cheresh (800)266.2077x26

Welcome home and thanks for serving. I am writing a book about Vietnam and would like to interview a nurse, specifically, and any others who want their story told. The book is a collection of no-nonsense, blunt, honest interviews about your experience and what you would like young Americans today to know about the Vietnam War. Personal interviews preferred (in or near Atlanta), phone/letters/email OK. Thanks in advance for your time, and thanks for taking care of the troops.

Dear Vietnam Veteran,
I know I should have written much sooner.
I can't say why I did not. Out of fear of admitting to myself, you were there, fighting a war. Or maybe ashamed. Ashamed that I never accepted the things you felt you had to do.
Whatever it is, I know how it must hurt. Believe me when I say it hurts me more. I have the burden of your hurt plus that of my own. The pain of not being able to show my true feeling towards you.
I am not writing this for the months you served in Vietnam, but for the many years, you were left alone with only your brother Veterans. You served proudly and it went unmentioned.
For a long time, I've wanted to express the words. The words an honorable Veteran needs to hear. For a long time, I've wanted to hold you during your times of pain.
God knows I wanted to. And only He knows why I never found the courage. I do not remember what I use to say; maybe I do not want to remember.
All I know is I hope that it is not too late to give you those things now.
For years you tried to be part of my world. Doing everything to please me, just to be noticed and given a little time and understanding...
I look back and see the demands I placed on your shoulders when you were young. "Fight your weakness, and always show strength to others around you."
Who was I to make such a demand? I sit here with tears in my heart; finally admitting to myself the one weakness you must have seen in me and never questioned. My inability to say the words that I know would have meant so much to you.
"Welcome Home." You served your country honorably.
Please hear these words now, from my heart. Please give me a chance to be part of your world now. The world I should have been part of long ago.
Love,
America http://home.earthlink.net/~dearvietnamveteran/

I especially want to thank the female lieutenant who first chewed me out for walking with my IV down and draining my blood back into the bottle but later that evening bringing my first good meal which was a complete pizza. We visited Camp English weekly. I was stationed at Cam Ranh Air Base from July 1969-January 1970 and then Chu Lai (Americal) from Jan-March 1970. I recently attended an American Red Cross Overseas Organization reunion in CO Springs with many ex VN donut dollies. Excellent Site! I was a high school student during Vietnam, wrote 3 soldiers over there, and wore a POW bracelet until he was listed in the paper as returned home. I avoided the news reports on tv about the war. I was quite apathetic, though I got disgusted by the protesters who badmouthed the guys over there as if they started the war, wanted the war, or wanted the war to continue. I didn't want war, but believed the guys who had to be there needed support, not blame. I wanted to just be a kid, felt I was a coward because I used to thank God that I was a girl and couldn't get drafted. My brother missed the draft by just a few months when the war ended soon after he turned 18.
I am in awe of the young girls and women who weren't apathetic like I was; content to stay "safe" at home in the states. Thank you for this site.

The comments in your guestbook are funny, sad, intimate and timely. I was interested in the guestbook for many reasons. My stepfather, brother and husband served in Vietnam at the same time around 1968 to 1970. I joined the National Health Service Corp in 1972 as a new nurse graduate and served in rural America as a pediatric nurse practitioner for close to 3 years. My mother pleaded with me not to go to Vietnam so I decided to serve stateside.
I joined the Army Nurse Corp in 1976 and remain in the Reserves today. I have served with many nurses that were in Vietnam while a member of the 6253th
USAH, the 347th USAH, and the 352nd CHS. I have always found them to be the best nurses and officers. In fact my Amry recruiter was a nurse that served in Vietnam, Rose
Sandecki.
I am currently attached to the 351st Civil Affairs Command as the Medical Liaison Officer. We are looking for nurses in our command to assist keeping close to 2,000 soldiers "medically ready" to assist in missions around the globe. I know nurses will come through again!
As an alumni of UC San Francisco School of Nursing, I hope to have a program next year on military nursing for our Nursing Alumni Day. If you would like to participate please contact me.
It is very gratifying to be a nurse and hear about all the wonderful things that nurses did for our soldiers in Vietnam. Thank you.

I want to thank all of you folks at the 18th Surg in Quan Tri and 95th Evac in
DaNang. Especially, you ladies. I was WIA a klick or 2 outside of Camp Evans on the 17th of December, 1968.
I got a gut full of shrapnel but still semi-ambulatory, so I got to sit up on the medivac over to Quan Tri. It was kind of a goofy night. Since I was sitting up all the blood ran into my crotch. I have never had so many women checking me out at the same time before or since. If I recall correctly, there was a lady Capt., and she had the magic touch. Every where she touched it hurt!!!: And every time it hurt I said "F---". After about the 3rd or 4th time she said "Could you pleeeeaase find some other way of expressing yourself". I don't recall much after that.
I do remember waking up after surgery, and seeing one of the loveliest nurses/women in my life. Truly, an angle. And I have been grateful to all of you and the sacrifices you made for us.
Thank you and Bless you all,

I was at 12TH Evac.in Cu Chi on Jan.11,1970 and while I was laying on stretcher in E.R.,I remember all the nurses moving all around me.But there was a black nurse looking down at me and her face kinda had a glow to it.She was wearing Major (gold leafs)on her collar. I was looking up at her and she was smiling at me and she said "Don't worry baby you are going to be allright".Funny thing about it,I thought she was wearing a white nurses uniform while all the others were in O.D.fatigues.This has really stayed in my head all these years but like others,I never talked about things much.If any nurses who were there at that time could tell me if she was real or if I was seeing things that were not there,I would sincerley appreciate it. Hi! I'm a male Viet Nam vet and stumbled over this info last month, and ask that you pass on it all women Viet Nam vets. They deserve to know about the benefit.
The State of NY has this program that will give up to $10,000 for a vet to go to college or
vo-tech. Mayby you've heard of it. I have the forms and want to send them to you. What's your address, please? The only catch to getting the money is that you MUST pick a school from the list on the back of form, in NY. I had already picked a school, in
MSCE, before I found out about this That's the one reason why the state will not pay for my course. The other reason is that the course I'm taking is less than 320 class hours; it's about 156. However, it's anticipated that this may change in the foreseeable future.
Please feel free to call. This program has in effect for only the last 12 years.
Again, I am a male seeking to pass on information to my female counterpart who served in Viet Nam. I don't wish to join. Please call me at work at 631-754-7914, x2906. I work for the Deparment of Veterans Affairs

I found your web site by accident. I was a patient at 91st evac in Sept. 1970 after I was hit by enemy fire outside Chu Lai and brought there for what I think was excellent care. The base was rocketed while I was there. I made my way back to the U.S. where I spent the next 16 months at Valley Forge Army Hospital.
You may have been one of my nurses.
I was the guy who accidentally brought a grenade into the triage area. I was on a stretcher and I forgot it was in my pocket. The nurse found it when I was turning over my wallet, etc. before going to the OR.
Partially as a result of my Army hospital experience I went on to get a Masters in Hospital Administration and now work as the Director of Graduate Medical Education at the University of Texas- Houston Medical School.

My experience with the VA and my PTSD is the same as it was in 1976 during my all male medical review process at Fort Dix, New Jersey. It remains frustrating. records lost or misplaced, no one is hellpful or remembers. Same ole same ole. I didn't protest the war but volunteered only to be raped and sexually abused at home. I get the feeling I didn't count but the fight I did at Fort Dix was standing up against my perpetrators who were legitimized by my government. How do you ever get over that?

Not only do I grieve for the dead and wounded Americans, but also for those we left in harms way, particularly the ones who worked for us, upon our untimely departure (that's politics). Foremost in my mind remains our rvn med supply secretary, "Miss Spring". If anyone has info as to how and learn something of the locals in Can Tho please let me know. Several people have brought to our attention that many of the original sites that carried some of the above information on the National HCV March on DC on June 23, 2002, still have the old url address. Please update to: http://hcvets.com/forum_public/hma/disc.htm

First off.. I just want to say that this is a topic extremely close to my heart. I'm only 18 years old, but I've seen what the Vietnam War has done for and to our soldiers who were stationed over there. My father is a Colonel in the United States Army and is now head of the Michigan Military police. I'm so proud to call him my father. He was stationed in Vietnam in 1969 and left in 71. Thankfully, ( to God) he came out safe, but its not until recently that I have seen the mental effects the war had on him along with other men in his platoon.
I, myself, have wanted to join the Army or maybe even the Marines, but
unfortunatly, due to a medical disablity, I am unable to enlist ( and yes, I have tried). These women gave their lives for their country which should be something that is recognized without a second thought. They were beautiful women and I respect them with all my heart. Thank you for this website. Thank you for sharing this type of inspiration to the world.

Because some one saw a entry I hadput in I was able to contact the wife of my former CO. There were people looking for 32 yrs and could not find her and by luck someone saw my entery and sent me her address and I got a phone #.
I called and found her home and as fate would have it she told me she at that moment was looking at a pic of him. She had remarried but still wondered about what he was like and what others knew about him. Because of the contact there were 6 men or more that were able to contact her and tell her the stuff she wanted to know.
We all had throughts about him all these years and now they are all been brought together and all the quesstions answered.
She made the comment to me that all these years she always felt that he was trying to make contact with her somehow. At last her feeling were right and they then were put to rest.

With time, I discovered another war, the Vietnam War and since then,
I just cannot break away from it!!!
But what i discovered the most is, a lost, American youth, destroyed
and so profoundly touched by the events.
And over the years, i realized the extend of this desaster, leaving
behind some indelible scars... they are painful, fragile and touchy.
Although i collect all kinds of documentaries on the Vietnam War, there
are two of them that I keep preciously and carefuly because I need
them. They, in fact, allow me to share with you some emotion...
Your emotion.
These documents are : "Platoon Anderson" and "Dear America".
I watch them as often as I can and some names, like Padilla the ranchero, Kevin Macauley
and the very young Keaveney of New York, are carved in my mind.
But of course, there is also William Reed Stock.
His mother wrote a letter that moved me tremendously.
Nevertheless, i do not and will never forget the others, the heroes
without any names.
With Internet, I was able to find many veterans. Unfortunatly, since
I am a French speaking man, and do not master the English language
very well, I have some difficulties to understand what i am discovering
and most of all what i want to express. But I know that whatever I
understand touches me deeply.
For this reason, I promised myself to take some intensive English
courses. These lessons will also be an asset for me when, one day,
In a very near future, I will finally go to this Big Black Wall,
where 50.000 names are engraved. There, I will quietly meditate.
I would certainly love to offer a flower for the memories of Padilla,
John Wilson, William Reed Stock, without forgetting Sharon Ann Lane...
this beautiful young nurse.
I am also planning on visiting the Brooklyn's Cemetery in order to put
a bouquet of flowers on Keaveney's grave...this young boy whose face
I was able to discover through the documents I have seen and read...
Somehow, I miss him so much!
It is about all for now.
In front of all of you, Veterans, I bow with the upmost respect.
And I would like you to know that I will always have some thoughts
and feelings for you.
God bless you.
Peace

When I came in from the field I was assigned to a tower at Camp Eagle. Sometimes during the day I would watch as the nurses changed shifts and went from one place to
antoher. I could see them from my perch in that tower. I had seen so many dead and wounded while in combat that I often wondered how all those pretty young women could cope with it daily. My heart went out to them. Today I live alone on VA disablity from PTSD. Do not all the nurses who served suffer from the same as do I?

Love,
America

THE CHERRY TREE WALK MEMORIAL
Under threat by the GREENIES
Over 36 years ago we left our shores to fight for our country and the ungrateful populace who sent us there.
512 Australians gave their lives so that these people can have the right to run around and vilify us,
We were left in a foreign country like shag on a rock and relied on our own resources to battle on alone.
Now the persecution has never really left and again it has surfaced by an attack on the very men and women whose memory we upheld in a memorial on a couple of acres in a small town in NSW.
Please click onto the BOOZER and go to the temporary posting in the guest book for a further understanding of this cowardly attack.
We are united in this new threat as in this memorial a section is dedicated to American war dead
and on special occasions Old Glory flies proudly alongside the Southern Cross.

I have recently taken an interest in the fact that women served in Vietnam. Why, you ask? I am a student at Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois. The Fine & Performing Arts Department puts on at least four (4) plays/musicals throughout the year, that also includes student directed plays. Anyhow, this Spring term the department is putting on "A Piece of My Heart", a play by Shirley Lauro based on the book "A Piece of My Heart". The play is based on the lives of six women who served in the Vietnam War and the experiences they come in contact with while in service and after their return home. I play Intelligence Officer B J Steele, a black woman that served in the war. I am having a blast doing the show. Opening night is tomorrow (2-27)and the show runs to Saturday (3-2). Wish me luck ladies, and thank you.

Great Website! I do have a question though. Why is there little mention of the USAF Air Evac Sqdns that flew patients in/out of country. My reason for asking is that I served with the 10th AE
Gp. and was TDY to Clark with the 57th AESq. I also was TDY to 55th AESq in Elmendorf, and later at Travis AFB. We flew primarily "Freedom Birds (c-141's)" and often had patients that were not too far out of surgery or, in the case of Operation Gold Run (71-72), Jail! I am very proud to have served with these women and would do so again if I had to. I would love to hear from anyone, nurses and techs, who served with the 10th or one of its squadrons, especially the 55th and 57th from 1971 -72.
The women of today could take some lessons in humility and courage from some. There is a retired nurse here in Fresno that, for years, hid the fact that she was a nurse at an evac hospital in country for about a year. She came home to work in the trauma center at the county
hospoital. A few years ago she attended a Veterans Day parade in fatigues and boonie hat and drew the attention of other female vets for other years. She has since retired from nursing to assist with the Legion of Valor Museum. Her name: Carolyn Tanaka.

On Dec. 26, 1968, I was shot in an ambush while serving as a Sgt., squad leader with Bravo Company 1st Batallion Third Marines. I have never forgotten the passion and compassion of those nurses who so gently cared for me,from the first field hospital/tent at An
Hoa, to NAS Da Nang, to Yokosuka Naval Hosp., Japan. I was hurt badly, but no differently that she had seen so very many,(too many,) times. By this time in her career, treating my wound was probably second nature to her. It's so strange. I remember the sad look on her face when she first saw the shape of my calloused feet after living in the bush for a year. My feet? Was it really her job to rub them with lotion every morning until the leatherlike skin returned to a semblance of normal? Such a little thing, yet so enormous. Was that a tear I saw in her eye, even after all the misery, pain, and sufferung she worked with on a daily basis? Was it really my feet that made her shed a tear? She was a Navy nurse from San Antonio. I don't remember her name, just as I don't remember the names of so many of the brave heroes I was so fortunate to have served with. But like those grunts whose faces are forever etched into my mind, she, too, is alive there. I pray that as I've grown old I've somehow, somewhere, touched someones life the way she did mine. How could I remember someone rubbing my feet almost 34 years ago? Such a little thing, such an thing, such an enormous heart. Where ever you are, lady, I've never forgotten you. Even my children know you. Here's love to you from an old warrior with a tear in his eye.

I served in Quang Tri from 10/69 ti 10/70 with Barky (20th TASS) right across Highway 1 from 18th SURG at Quang Tri.
I was lucky enough to never need their services, but I spent a lot of time in line to donate blood. I have a world of respect for anyone who could do what the nurses, doctors and corpsmen did and remain sane.
Thanks for being there, thanks for coming to a few parties, and thanks for making the war a little less horrible.

Ladies,
I just returned from a Vietnam veterans reunion in Hampton, VA entitled Tet '68. A few of you lovely ladies have been there in the past. In talking to a U.S. Army nurse, who was in attendance, we discussed getting you guys together at the next Tet '68 (Feb.'03 in Hampton, VA) and she is willing to be the contact. My question is? Do you have anything planned for the near future and do you feel that a good turnout would occur at this. I am the President of the Vietnam Era Seabees and we have offered our assistance in getting the publicity out there so you guys could get together. I need your thoughts! And, as always we all appreciate, beyond any way we could express,
everything that all of you did. Also, would it be possible to make it a Vietnam nurses reunion? Not just Army? Looking forward to hearing from you. Can Do! Bruce

In Jan 68 I was an MP 1lt and my platoon found two army nurses trapped in their quarters on the first night of the TET offensive in NHA
TRANG,S. Vn.NVA soldiers had actually
been in and out of their bedroom all nite as they hid behind some large trunks without being discovered. As the NVA were still in the adjoining buildings we gave the nurses our flack vests to put over their nightgowns and ran them to safety among heavy small arms fire into the Hq across the street.I believe these nurses were assigned to the 8th Army field hospital in Nha Trang but I could be wrong. These brave nurses came very close to losing their lives and because they kept their heads they saved same.I have always wondered about the rest of their lives.Maybe through the magic of computers someone in your membership will recognize this account and let me know about them. I had the greatest respect for the nurses in Viet Nam they were magnificent heroes.

I served with the 22nd Surg. in Phu Bai from May of 69 to the end of Aug. when I was transfered to the 85th. My future husband was assigned to the 571st Dustoff unit. His name is Jack. We were married in Nam and spent the next 26 years traveling with Uncle Sam. We retired in 95. Nam seems so long ago and yet reading the names of the units and the locations brings small bits of it back. I wish I could hold on to those fleeting moments and revisit them again. To all those with whom we served over the years-Thanks for the memories.

As you can imagine, a lot of entertainers were women.
Thanks and regards,

I was in the marines in DaNang, Vietnam during 69-70. I had an aunt whose name was Lt.Col Maralee Hodgson who may have been in charge of the nurse corps at Cam Rahn Bay Army Hospital during the same time period. She was a high ranking army nurse so i'm assuming it was the army hospital. She served in the army nurse corps for 32 years. Passed away a few years age. Just looking to see if there is someone who knew her during her tour. There must be some infor on her with her high rank. I easily found my complete outfit i served with in
DaNang. It was HMH-361 and i found photo pictures of my actual buddies over there in which I myself took some of the pictures 33 years ago.
So there must be something on Lt. Col. Maralee Hodgson who was suppose to have been in charge of the nurse corps. thank you for any info.

Subj: URGENT! Deceased Female 100% Disabled American Veteran Homeless, wounded in Vietnam denied Arlington burial
Date: 01/16/2002 3:15:37 PM Central Standard Time
Urgent you reply at once. Deceased Mary Bender lies cold, in wait of proper military burial at Arlington National Cemetery. She served over 9 years in the military. She was discharged three times. Once for end of enlistment contract. Once involuntarily for pregnancy and once to accept an appointment as a Warrant officer. She served a tour in Vietnam where she was wounded in action. Her name is on the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington.
Mary Bender's body lies at the Cupertino Funeral Parlor located at ~12341 South Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road in Saratoga, California. PHONE: (408) 257-6262 FAX: (408) 257-0104
According to the funeral director at Cupertino, Arlington National Cemetery advises him Mary cannot be buried since she did not have enough time in service. The fact is, if one checks the criteria for burial at Arlington, Mary is more than qualified. She was wounded in action, receiving a Purple Heart. But she refused. That should not matter. She received it as wounded in action. She was declared a 100% Disabled Veteran. She was honorably discharged more than once. Had she not been involuntarily discharged for pregnancy, and been wounded in action, no doubt she would have received a full 20 year retirement as did the father of her son Joshua Bender did. Which would also have earned the right to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
When in fact perhaps it is because she is woman! Mary has been treated wrongfully by her involuntary discharge for pregnancy. Help get the word out and do this story. We need to spread the word of the homeless veteran and the indignation they receive and the very fact they become homeless because of their ill treatment as a
Veteran. President Bush has made a conscious effort to assist all veterans but especially those homeless like
MAry. Mary served honorably but has been treated with indignation alive and now deceased. Let her go home to rest at Arlington.
Involuntary discharge for pregnancy was ruled in 1976 in the 2nd District Court of Appeals
in Crawford vs Cushman to be unequal, unfair, and unconstitutional. Pregnancy should have been treated as any other temporary illness. It also breached a legal binding enlistment contract. Involuntary discharge for pregnancy violated Mary's 5th, 8th and 14th amendments. for married women, you can tack on he 1st amendment. There is no reason Mary Bender is not deserving of a proper burial at Arlington. Contact:
Joshua Bender, her next of kin who happens to be the child she was discharged for at: 1-646-302-8618 who is in Saratoga, California at this time. This number is his cell number. E-mail him:
