AFA Congratulates Albanian Representatives on Securing Two Parliamentary Seats

Albanians for America (AFA) congratulates the Albanian political representatives from the Presheva Valley on their projected securing of two seats in Serbia’s National Assembly, marking an important achievement for the political representation of Albanians in Presheva, Bujanovac, and Medveđa.

This development offers an important opportunity to strengthen the voice of the Albanian community within Serbia’s institutions and advance its longstanding demands for equal rights, political representation, economic development, and an end to discriminatory practices.

The broader electoral developments in Serbia also represent a significant moment in the country’s political trajectory. The transition from sustained street protests to electoral change demonstrates the power of civic participation and collective action. However, a change in political leadership does not necessarily signify a change in political direction.

Serbia now faces an opportunity to move beyond the nationalist policies and regional antagonism associated with the Milošević era and perpetuated under Aleksandar Vučić. Yet, concerning rhetoric emerging in the aftermath of the elections raises legitimate questions about whether this political transition will translate into a meaningful departure from the past.

Genuine democratic progress must be measured not only by electoral outcomes, but also by concrete commitments to minority rights, respect for Kosovo’s sovereignty and independence, accountability, and constructive relations with neighboring countries.

AFA hopes that this moment will mark the beginning of a new chapter in which Serbia embraces democratic accountability, addresses the longstanding grievances of its Albanian community, and becomes a responsible and constructive partner in the Western Balkans and beyond.
